Body Checking Policy for U14/U15 Player Evaluations

As players transition into the hitting age groups at U14 and U15, we recognize the importance of evaluating their ability to safely and appropriately engage in physical play. During tryouts, body contact and hitting will be allowed along the boards only, and must be executed in a safe and controlled manner. Open ice hits and similar high-speed contact will not be permitted.

Coaches will provide instruction and clear expectations to all players prior to the start of evaluations. Our goal is to assess how players respond to and manage physicality, but to do so in a way that prioritizes safety and development. This measured approach allows us to include body contact as part of the evaluation process without putting players—many of whom are new to hitting—in vulnerable or potentially dangerous situations.

We believe this strikes the right balance between introducing hitting in a responsible way and supporting a positive tryout experience for all players.

Body Contact & Checking Development Policy

At the U14 and U15 levels, players are introduced to body contact and body checking as part of their continued progression in the game. We recognize that many players at this stage are new to hitting, and our goal is to ensure they learn how to give and receive contact safely, confidently, and effectively.

Post-Team Selection Development Plan:

  1. Dedicated Hitting Clinics
All U14 and U15 teams will be provided with access to specialized development sessions focused on body contact and checking. These clinics will be conducted in team sized groups to ensure individual attention and instruction tailored to the players’ skill levels.

  2. Progressive Skill Development
Instruction will begin with foundational concepts such as angling, positioning, and safe contact along the boards. As players gain comfort and confidence, the curriculum will progress to include proper checking technique, receiving contact safely, and situational awareness in game play.

  3. Ongoing Reinforcement
Hitting instruction will not be a one-time event. Coaches will have the opportunity to revisit and reinforce body contact skills throughout the season, particularly after players have had game experience and are ready to further refine their skills.

  4. Qualified Instructors
All hitting and contact instruction will be delivered by experienced coaches or development staff who are trained in teaching proper checking techniques, with an emphasis on player safety and long-term development.

  5. Safety First
At every stage, player safety is the top priority. Emphasis will be placed on legal, safe body contact, respect for opponents, and situational awareness to reduce the risk of injury and build players’ confidence.

By providing structured, ongoing instruction, we aim to help all players at the U14 and U15 levels develop the tools they need to navigate contact hockey with skill and confidence.
