How Fees Are Changing, Georgian Bay Islanders (Georgian Bay Minor Hockey)

PrintHow Fees Are Changing

🏒 Welcome to the New Era of Representative Hockey

PMHA + MMHA Reorganized as One Unified Association

This year marks a major shift for our hockey community: PMHA and MMHA have officially reorganized for Representative hockey under a single, united structure. This reorganization was guided by feedback from both associations — parents, volunteers, and administrators — and we've selected the policies and practices that worked best for everyone.

In doing so, we’ve made several key changes to how the program operates, including registration fees, fundraising, uniforms, and how costs are structured by age group.

💰 What’s New With Registration Fees?

✅ One Registration Fee — Straightforward and Transparent

Families will now pay a single registration fee based on the team your player is selected for. Previously, our associations used a base fee + rep fee model. While that system worked, this new structure simplifies things and gives parents a clear picture of their full costs up front.

✅ Age-Based Fee Alignment

We’ve also right-sized registration fees based on age group. This ensures fairness by recognizing the real differences in costs across divisions:

  • Older players have longer games and require more officials — their fees reflect that.

  • Younger players play shorter games with fewer officials — they benefit from lower fees.

✅ Included Uniform Items

This year, the following uniform components are included in your registration — and are required each season for all players:

  • Two pairs of game socks

  • Helmet sticker set

🔄 Fundraising Policy: What’s Changing?

One of the biggest changes comes in how we handle fundraising — especially for former MMHA families.

Previously, MMHA often used a centralized fundraising approach, where some or all proceeds went back to the association, helping to reduce registration fees. The downside? It didn’t reward teams who went the extra mile and resulted in high Team Fees charged after you made the squad.

We’ve adopted a more effort-based fundraising-friendly model, similar to what PMHA used:

  • Teams keep what they raise: 100% of fundraising proceeds now go directly to the team that earned them.

  • Covers extras: That money can offset tournament costs, practice jerseys, team video, water bottles, and more — things families would normally pay out-of-pocket.

  • Mandatory Association Fundraiser: All players now participate in the main lottery fundraiser. This ensures every team, regardless of age or level, has the opportunity to cover major costs like tournaments.

  • Supported Team Fundraisers: The association is also helping teams organize bottle drives, tag days, and banner sponsorships — with 100% of proceeds staying with the team.

  • Additional Team Fundraisers: Teams can seek approval from the association to run additional campaigns such as office pools or resale-based fundraisers (meat sticks, gift wrap, frozen food, etc.). Again, all proceeds stay with the team that puts in the work.

As a result of fundraising proceeds going directly to the teams, our registration fees are higher, but our team fees are much lower (and in some cases can be eliminated altogether).

👕 Jersey Policy: What's Changing?

  • Player-Owned Jerseys: All players are now required to purchase their own game jerseys and name bars. These become the property of the player and their family.

  • Removable Name Bars: Name bars are designed to be removable, allowing jerseys to be reused or resold in future seasons.

  • Number Adjustments: If needed, jersey numbers can be changed to support resale or to pass jerseys along to siblings.

  • Consistent & High-Quality Gear: This approach ensures all players wear consistent, professional-quality gamewear, while promoting long-term cost savings and greater flexibility for families.

In year one, families will have an upfront cost for purchasing jerseys, but once bought, the jerseys become the player’s property and can be reused in future seasons, handed down to siblings, traded, or resold—making them a long-term asset rather than a recurring expense.

🏒 Practice & Game Structure: What's Changing?

Players will benefit from more ice time than ever before, giving them excellent opportunities for development and high-quality, competitive gameplay. Here’s how practices and games are structured across team levels:

    Proof of purchase is required.

  • Young Referee Rebate

    Proof of service is required.

📈 The Reality of Rising Costs

We understand that fees have increased this year — and we want to be transparent about why.  In addition to the policy changes and the additional ice time/games that teams are receiving, hockey, like many activities, is feeling the effects of inflation and rising operational costs:

  • Ice rental fees are increasing across our region

  • Officials and timekeepers continue to be in high demand, and their rates have increased accordingly.

  • Hockey Canada Insurance has gone up significantly this year due to legal costs and lawsuits at the national level

With inflation holding steady around 3%, we’re all seeing higher prices, and our program costs are no exception. We’ve done our best to minimize the impact while continuing to deliver a high-quality, competitive hockey experience for every player.
