Transitioning from Initiation to Modified Ice Hockey

As players graduate from Initiation, they move into our U7 and U8 Modified Ice Programming. This next step in their hockey journey introduces more structured practices, increased player interaction, and modified game formats designed to match their size, speed, and strength.

Program Details

  • Season Length: 25 weeks (excluding a 2-week break over Christmas/New Year)

  • Start & End Dates: Second weekend after Labour Day – Last weekend of March Break

  • Location:  Join Centennials Hockey to play in NSSRC (Midland) or Flames Hockey to play at the PMCC (Penetang)

  • Ice Sessions Per Week: 2 x 50-minute practices

    • One shared practice with both U7 & U8 teams

    • One dedicated practice per team

  • Games:

    • U7: ~10-12 exhibition games against other centers

    • U8: Exhibition games in October/November, then 14 games in the GBTLL

    • No playoffs – Focus on fun and skill development

Modified Ice Game Format

  • Smaller ice surfaces to match player size, speed, and strength

  • Smaller nets designed for young goalies

  • No offsides, icings, or faceoffs – Keeping the game fast and engaging

  • Single-day Jamborees – Players compete in modified ice tournaments

Practice Structure & Development Focus

  • Station-Based Practices: Maximizes skill development with efficient ice usage

  • Reduced Standing in Lines: Players are constantly engaged and improving

  • Skill-Based Grouping: Players practice with others of similar ability while being challenged appropriately

  • Rotating Goalie Experience: No set goalies – all players get a chance to try the position, with equipment provided by the association
